Protestors Clash on Streets

A group calling itself the English Defence League, said to be protesting against Islamic extremism, met with a counter demonstration in Birmingham City Centre.

Hundreds of men and youths threw missiles and bottles at each other and hurled bricks at Riot Police, who said it was not possible to estimate the amount of  arrests made, though they estimated that around 200 people were involved in the incidents which they managed to contain to the New Street and Bennetts Hill area.

The police helicopter was utilised throughout, flying over the city centre for several hours following the movements of the protesters making sure that the heavy police presence was visible.

The English Defence League had urged its supporters to avoid violent clashes on their website, which also said that anyone causing trouble would be arrested or removed and that it could destroy the hard work put in by the league and police, and "would ruin the day for everyone". The article also stressed it was not a fascist organisation, something it wants to make very clear.

The police and council have been criticised on anti-fascist websites for continuing to allow another protest to go ahead.
