Dig in at Dudley Library

Dudley Library is transforming its reading room into a coalmine to help families learn more about the borough’s industrial past.

The transformation is part of the borough’s ‘Dig’ programme, which has a number of free activities and events at the library, Dudley Museum and Art Gallery and the Wrens Nest Nature Reserve from Saturday 10 September.

Running until the end of the month it coincides with the Rock and Fossil Festival (Saturday 24 and Sunday 25 September) and is part of the BBC’s national ‘Hands on History’ initiative, which encourages families to take an interest in archaeology and digs.

On Saturday 10 September from 2.30 to 3.30pm there will be a sandpit dig at the library. The activity is free of charge and will enable children to dig for jigsaw pieces that can be put together to form a fossil. There will also be boxes containing hidden artefacts that children can touch and feel to guess what’s inside.

Local historian John Hemingway will hold a lecture for adults interested in mining history on Wednesday 14 September from 2.30 to 3.30pm.

As part of the Rock and Fossil Festival children can help to build a time capsule on Sunday 25 September from 10.30am to 1.30pm. Familiestaking part will be able to document items of particular interest to them such as favorite toys, TV programmes, books and songs. They will then be encouraged to take their time capsule home to bury or hide away somewhere to be found by future generations.

Councillor Adrian Turner, cabinet member for housing, libraries and adult learning, said:

“Dudley is rich in natural and industrial history and these activities highlight how the two are very closely linked.

”I’m sure lots of families will want to come to Dudley Library to join in the fun and as there are a wide-range of activities on Saturday 24 and Sunday 25 September for the Rock and Fossil Festival it’s a great time to get involved.”
