A new art exhibition featuring pictures chosen by museum staff opens at Dudley Museum and Art Gallery this week.
The exhibition, Staff Room, has involved every member of the team from the managers and curators to front of house staff and cleaners.
The exhibition includes sketches and paintings in a range of media. Some of the pictures were chosen collectively by the staff with others being singled out as a favourite or as particularly interesting. Many of the pictures are accompanied by a statement from their patron explaining why they picked it, with reasons ranging from the sparking of a childhood memory to bemused interest in a quirky piece.
There are some old favourites from the collection such as ‘The Sale of Old Dobbin’ as well as comparison pieces such as the pencil study and final painting for the Percy Shakespeare piece ‘Summer,’ coastal scenes, images of Dudley and the Black Country during its industrial heyday, and perhaps most unexpectedly a portrait of Elvis chosen by front of house assistant Anne Hurley.
Councillor David Stanley, cabinet member for environment and culture, said:
“This is a wonderful and thoroughly democratic exhibition. The team has chosen an eclectic mix of paintings, which reflect the range and quality of pieces held in the Dudley collection.”
“I hope that people will enjoy visiting the exhibition and will perhaps make their own interpretation of the pieces.”
The museum on St James’s Rd is open 10am – 4pm Monday to Saturday and admission is free. |
