HALESOWEN Police are reminding motorists to lock their vehicles and remove all valuables - including sat navs, iPods, mobile phones and clothing - when leaving them unattended.
This message comes after a spate of theft from motor vehicles in the Howley Grange area of Halesowen.Taking the following simple steps could significantly reduce the likelihood of being a victim of vehicle crime:
- Remove all valuables; never leave anything on display
- Take portable Sat Navs and the support cradle with you and make sure that those tell-tale suction pad marks are wiped away
- Never leave valuables in the glove box as this is the first place thieves look
- Security mark all valuables in the car, such as radios and Sat Nav systems, using an ultraviolet pen and keep a record of all property marked
- Lock all windows, doors and the sun roof whenever you leave the vehicle, even for just a few minutes
- Fit an alarm and always use it
- All new cars are fitted with electronic immobilisers but if your car is older, consider having an immobiliser professionally fitted
- Fit a locking petrol cap and wheel nuts
- Buy a steering lock and use it every time you leave the car
- Have your car registration number etched on every window
- Consider fitting a vehicle tracking device
- Never leave keys in the ignition, door or on dash; even for just a few seconds.
Owners of sat navs are encouraged to mark their device with their postcode or vehicle registration number using special security UV markers, and to make a note of the name, make, model and serial number on www.immobilise.com
Police are now carrying out plain clothed routine patrols in these areas to target offenders.
Sergeant Wendy Tyler said: "We are asking people to help us and themselves by thinking very carefully about where they park their vehicle and how they make sure that it is secure before leaving it.
"Don't give the criminal a chance remember to remove it or lose it. It really is that simple when it comes to keeping your car and your belongings safe."
Members of the public are urged to call police on 101 if they see anything suspicious or contact the independent charity Crimestoppers in confidence on 0800 555 111.
