Written by Assistant Editor
Saturday, 03 April 2010 18:25

John Polychronakis, Chief Executive at Dudley Council, said:

“We are extremely disappointed that Dudley was targeted by the EDL and are saddened to witness their public disorder and violence. This was not a peaceful demonstration.

“However, the council and the police recognise that the UAF’s event did pass peacefully, as intended.

“Dudley Council made it clear from the outset that it was opposed to the protest taking place and we worked closely with the police to do all we could to protect and support local people and local businesses.

‘REAL CHANGES’ TO WOLVERHAMPTON POLICING FOLLOWING MAJOR REVIEW E-mail
Written by Assistant Editor
Thursday, 01 April 2010 15:03

WEST Midlands Police officially launches its major restructure under Programme Paragon on Tuesday 6 April, 2010.

The ‘nuts and bolts’ review is aimed at shaping the organisation for the future. The changes have been driven by a desire to ensure the force continues to provide the highest levels of service and protection – against a backdrop of tightening public sector finance.

The most obvious change across the West Midlands will see 21 operational command units replaced by 10 local policing units (LPUs). Wolverhampton LPU will incorporate the areas formerly policed from Bilston Street in the city centre and Wednesfield’s Alfred Squire Road station.

The LPU will be divided into four sectors – Wolverhampton central, north east, south east and south west. Each of these will be managed by an Inspector. Within the sectors there will be 21 neighbourhoods, all aligned to local authority boundaries to facilitate partnership working. Each neighbourhood will have its own, dedicated policing team consisting of a Sergeant and numerous PCs supported by PCSOs. Together, their sole objective will be to tackle low-level local crime and address issues of greatest concern to residents – particularly anti-social behaviour.

In a Realm Of Their Own Indian Rhinos E-mail

West Midland Safari Park has introduced Indian Rhinoceros (Rhinoceros

unicornis) to their collection for the first time since the Park opened
37 years ago.

Work started on the state of the art exhibit in September 2009 and forms part of the four-mile self-drive safari. To ensure that the pair of young adult rhino feel completely at home, their new house - which alone cost £500,000 - features central heating, rubber lined floors, a deep litter of bark in which to sleep and a heated indoor pool in which to wallow - is considered to be one of the best Rhino facilities in the UK.

Albino frog joins Dudley Zoo crew . . . E-mail
Written by Assistant Editor

albino frog Dudley ZooA rare and colourful new creature has joined the animal collection at Dudley Zoological Gardens.

Albi, the albino South American Ornate Horned Frog, was bought as a pet but has now has been donated to the zoo.

The two-year-old yellow and orange creature has gone on display in the Discovery Centre education block.

Head of Presentation (Education) David Riley said: "Albi is a good addition to our collection. He has colourful markings and, being albino, he is very unusual as they don't usually survive in the wild."

The Ornate Horned Frog is also known as the 'Pac Man Frog' as its wide mouth resembles the arcade game character.
