Honour for two Walsall stalwarts E-mail
Written by Assistant Editor
Friday, 04 June 2010 00:00

Two of Walsall’s leading lights and former Mayors are to be honoured for their contribution to public service by being admitted as Honorary Freemen of the Borough.

Councillor Bill Madeley MBE and Colin Beilby will be presented with silver caskets and scrolls to record their admission at a ceremony at Walsall Council House on Monday 7 June at 6pm.

Councillor Madeley was first elected to Walsall Council in 1971 as a Labour councillor for Bentley which later became Bentley & Darlaston North – a seat which he holds today.

He has clocked up almost 40 years’ service, becoming Mayor in 1988, Deputy Leader of the Council from 1997-1998 and Leader of the Council from January to May 1999.

He has served on a host of council committees and sub committees including education and community services and development control and has represented the council on a wide range of charities and organisations including Walsall Society for the Blind and Darlaston Housing Trust.

In 2003, Councillor Madeley formed Darlaston Events Committee and became its chairman.

He has worked tirelessly to support the regeneration of the town and develop the Old Hall’s People Partnership Centre, the Bentley Over 60’s Club and Darlaston Sons of Rest.

He was awarded the MBE in 2006.

Councillor Madeley said: "It is a great honour that the council is bestowing on Mr Beilby and myself and it is very humbling."

Colin Beilby represented the Palfrey ward and has just over 20 years’ service as a councillor.

He was Mayor in 2001 and had to retire from the council in 2002 due to ill health.

Mr Beilby has more than 50 years’ involvement with Joseph Leckie Community Technology College as a parent member of the PTA and a governor, including a period as the chair of governors.

The school’s new state of the art building has been named The Colin Beilby Building in recognition of his service.

Mr Beilby has also worked and been a governor at Delves Nursery, Infants and Junior Schools, Whitehall Nursery, Infants and Juniors, Palfrey Nursery, Infants & Juniors and Fullbrook Nursery.

He has also served on a number of Walsall Council committees and has represented the local authority on a range of external organisations including Walsall Citizens Advice Bureau and Age Concern Walsall.

In 1997 Mr Beilby was awarded the Medal of Merit in appreciation of his services to Walsall South District Scouts.

Mr Beilby said: "I feel privileged to be awarded this honour."

The Mayor of Walsall, Councillor Gary Clarke, said the Freemen of the Borough was a fitting recognition for the roles played by Councillor Madeley and Mr Beilby.

He added: “They have both made a significant contribution to the borough and have enriched so many residents’ lives as a result of their efforts.”

More than 10,000 Walsall people who suffer from a condition can find out more about life with it.

Walsall Centre for Independent Living in Bridge Street, Walsall is set to hold a diabetes awareness day on Friday June 18 from 10am to 1pm.

The common life-long condition is where the amount of glucose in the blood is too high as the body cannot use it properly.

Roy Cadman, manager of the Walsall Council-supported Walsall Centre for Independent Living, said: “Over 13,000 people in Walsall have diabetes. That’s a large number of people and an even larger number of friends and relatives who live with those sufferers.

“There are things that people can do and advice that can be sought. We hope this day will be a way that people can find out more but also to make a connection that could stand them in good stead in the future.”

The event will include information stands where people with diabetes as well as friends and carers will be able to receive advice about the illness, healthy eating, eye specialists and welfare benefits and other services.

Lloyds Chemists will also be there offering diabetes tests and information on support available from chemists.

Tea, coffee, reduced sugar biscuits and cakes will be available along with a prize draw for a Pamper Hamper to raise funds for Diabetes UK.

If you require any more information on the event please phone Roy, Cathy or Georgie on 01922 650790

Walsall Council is to invest more than £500,000 to provide better internet facilities across the borough's schools.

A new wide area network (WAN) is to be developed which will allow the borough's 17 secondary and 58 primary, nursery and special schools to make better use of the internet for teaching and learning.

Members of the cabinet will discuss the proposals when they meet on Wednesday 9 June.

Council leader Councillor Mike Bird said: "The internet is being used more and more and exisiting internet facilities are already being used to their maximum capacity.

"We want to ensure Walsall remains at the forefront and our schools and students are able to take advantage of the latest cutting edge 21st century technology.

Scammers are targeting computer users with bogus emails, bosses from Walsall Council trading standards warn.

Residents who carry out their banking online are being targeted by internet fraudsters who send fake emails called 'Phishing' in which the recipient is asked to provide personal information so that their account can be verified.

These types of emails usually purport to be from a bank or a building society and ask you to follow the link in the email and enter your internet log on details to confirm them.
