A major regeneration masterplan for Brierley Hill is set to move a step closer when Dudley Council submits a £7.8million bid for funding.
The High Street and northern and southern gateways into the town will all be transformed under an improvement blueprint.
Regional development agency Advantage West Midlands has already given the green light to an outline funding bid from the council. A detailed bid for the final approval will be submitted in January.
If approved it will kick-start improvements such as new paving, lighting, tree planting, public art, seating, cycle racks, bins, and signs in the High Street.
A number of funding sources are being explored to renovate the wall at the war memorial at Marsh Park as part of proposals for the southern gateway into the town.
There will also be a new public square in the town centre to provide a meeting place for shoppers and workers.
The northern gateway, at the Brierley Hill Civic Hall, will have new public art.
Councillor Les Jones, cabinet member for regeneration, said:
“The plans which are being drawn up will make Brierley Hill a vibrant and modern town centre for the people who shop, work and visit.
“These proposals demonstrate very clearly the council’s commitment to regenerating our town centres.”
Mark Foley, Black Country Partnerships director at Advantage West Midlands, added:
“Brierley Hill, alongside Dudley town, centre is in the West Midlands region’s top 20 priorities as impact investment locations. Advantage West Midlands is committed to supporting these locations through its own investment and to encouraging other partners to do the same. Our aim is to help Brierley Hill become more attractive to investors, to create jobs and encourage enterprise to benefit local communities and the regional economy as a whole. “
The outline bid was approved by the development agency in January 2008, paving the way for the council to draw up the detail of the scheme. The detailed proposals will form the final bid to AWM in January.
The £7.8million bid is part of an overall £16million plan, made up of a range of public and private sector regeneration schemes.
