Sheltered housing schemes help to reduce people’s stay in hospital

Three flats in council sheltered housing schemes are to be used to help prevent prolonging people’s stay in hospital in an initiative being launched later this month.

The initiative will see three flats in Woodhouse Court Quarry Bank, Jack Newell Court, Coseley and Grange Court, Stourbridge used to provide short term care and support to help people regain their skills and confidence and allow them to return home following a stay in hospital.

The properties will also be available for people who are waiting for their own homes to be adapted. They will also offer an alternative emergency 24hour facility for people who previously would have been admitted to a care or nursing home on a short term basis, following a period of illness for example.

Councillor Lesley Faulkner, cabinet member for adult and community services, said:

“This scheme is exactly the kind of creative and flexible approach we want to promote in Dudley in relation to offering care and support for people. Wherever we can, we want to enable people to live as independent lives as possible in homes of their choice.

“Many people tell us that they don’t want to stay in hospital longer than they have to, similarly keeping people in hospital unnecessarily is expensive. Using elements of our sheltered housing stock in this manner offers another alternative to social care, health care and housing professionals to help people make the right choices on their road to regaining independence.”

The properties will also provide an opportunity to showcase Dudley telecare options as well as being able to trial new equipment.

Telecare is the general term for a range of assisting technology products specifically for people who would benefit from a little extra support in the home. All telecare alarm products are linked to the service’s call centre which operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
