Pelsall Common play area in £80,000 boost

Playtime will be something to shout about in Pelsall after councillors, officers and community campaigners all championed its cause for improvements and secured £51,000 in funding.

The joint Walsall Council Greenspace Improvement Service (GIS)and Friends of Pelsall Common bid was up against 33 national projects making this an even bigger success story for all.

The existing play area is in need of an upgrade as its equipment has become more and more worn over time.

As well as the £51,000 pledged by the Trustees of Cory Environmental Trust (CETB), the GIS managed to secure funding prior to the end of the financial year to purchase new equipment and S106 funding has also been ploughed into the project from the Leylands Farm development.

This makes a total of £80,000 of funding and equipment for the play area.

Councillor Mike Bird, Walsall Council Leader, said: "This is fantastic news for Pelsall - particularly as the CETB received £1.3million of grant applications from all over the country.

"Praise for this successful joint bid must go to Gareth Seedhouse and Bruce Mackay from the Greenspace Improvement Service for their dedication and perseverance and to Maureen Payton of the Friends of Pelsall Common Group for her support and commitment.

"It's also testament to the efforts of the ward councillors who have campaigned for improved facilities.

"With the Pelsall community throwing its weight behind the bid so many people have pulled together to ensure future generations will reap the benefits of this project."

A timeline for the project will be worked out over the coming weeks.
