Walsall College praises Volunteer spirit

Volunteers who have helped and supported students and staff at Walsall Adult & Community College have been praised at a special event held today.

The team of 19 volunteers, ranging from ages 20 to 70 years convened earlier today at the college's main campus in Hawbush Road.

The group have helped by giving their time and resources to support tutors in the classroom, helping out in the college library, providing support to partner organisations and working with various curriculum areas in the college.

And the college is looking to add new volunteers to its team and is appealing for local people to come forward.

Volunteer Bill Stevens with Elaine Massey from Walsall Adult & Community CollegeElaine Johnson, programme area leader for employability and support said: "Our volunteers come with great enthusiasm and have provided excellent support to us here at WACC.

"They ask for little in return for their efforts, so our event next week is an opportunity to recognise and remind them how important they are to us."

Bill Stevens, 53 from Bloxwich was one of the volunteers at today's event. Bill joined the team earlier this year upon taking early retirement three years ago. During his time at the college he has helped adult learners with special needs, supported ICT course tutors at the college's main Hawbush Centre and Links to Work in Willenhall.

He said: "Being a volunteer is extremely gratifying. You get a sense of belonging and real purpose and it's great to see learners progress and move on.

"But at the same time, the college has been very supportive. My health and confidence have improved dramatically since I became a volunteer and I'd recommend it to anyone who can sacrifice a few hours per week and who have the right set of circumstances."

Bill is now working toward his PTLLS teaching course and hopes to work with special needs students in the future.

Maria Gilling, college principal added: "I would like to thank our volunteers for the important work they do for the college. We greatly value the relationship fostered with volunteers who generously give of their time, knowledge and life experience to support our curriculum and services."

If you would like to become part of the team or find out what it takes to be a volunteer please call Elaine Johnson on 01922 654510. You must be willing to undergo a CRB check and provide two references.
