Death of former mayoress

Tributes were today being paid to a serving councillor and former mayoress of Walsall who passed away at home at the weekend.
Councillor Joan Barton was Mayoress from 1990 - 1991 when former Councillor Malcolm Barton was Mayor.
A serving member of the council, she had represented Birchills Leamore for Labour since May 1998.
Council leader Mike Bird said: "Everyone at Walsall was very sad to hear the news. Our thoughts are very much with her family at this difficult time."
Current Mayor Councillor Garry Perry said: "“I would like to add my sincerest condolences to her family and friends .
“Joan was elected to the council on the same day as me, and was a very valued member of the council. People still have fond memories of her year as Mayoress.”
Funeral arrangements will be confirmed in the next few days.
