Young budding politicians from Walsall will be flying the flag for the borough in a national televised debate in the House of Commons today (Fri 4 Nov).
Three members of Walsall's United Kingdom Youth Parliament (UKYP) will be joining 200 other young people from across the country, to take part in the debate being screened live on the BBC Parliament channel at 11.05am.
They are Members of Youth Parliament (MYP) Alex Lemord, aged 15, Trevor Taderera, aged 17 and Deputy Member of Youth Parliament Nadi Choudhury, aged 16, who is also the media representative for the West Midlands Youth Parliament.
The debate will be around five key issues; zero tolerance on bullying, say no to university fees and yes to graduate tax, greener future, cheaper and more accessible transport for all and end child poverty.
These issues have been selected by over 65,000 young people in the UK and after debates on each issue, one will be voted upon and selected to become United Kingdom Youth Parliament's national campaign for the year.
The trio have also consulted with other young people in Walsall to find out their opinions on the topics so that they can fairly represent the views of our area at the debate.
The debate is being chaired by Speaker of the House John Bercow and promises to be an excellent day for young people involved.
"This is an incredible opportunity for the three young representatives, " said cabinet member for children's services Councillor Rachel Andrew.
"Normally only MPs are allowed to sit on the famous green benches let alone take over the chambers for the day so it really is a fantastic opportunity for young people to create a part of history.
"This is an excellent, positive example of what young people can do should they be given the opportunity to shine. Everyone in Walsall wishes our three young people the very best of luck.
Trevor Taderera aged 16 from St Thomas More School, Alex Lemord, 15 from Shelfield Academy were elected Members of Youth Parliament (MYPs) earlier this year.
Their deputies are Becky Mason, 14 from Shire Oak School and Nadirur Choudhury, 15 from Bluecoat School.
