Launched by Integrated Young People’s Support Services (IYPSS) the Walsall Young People Awards 2012 aims to recognise those unsung heroes who have overcome adversity, make a positive difference to everyday life and contribute to the development of their community.

The awards celebrate achievement of young people in eight categories:  Bravery, Achievement in the Arts and Music, Achievement in Sports, Good Friends & Carers, Citizenship & Community, Environment & Sustainability, Personal Development, and Young Entrepreneur.

Winners in each category will receive a trophy to be presented at a special award evening by a local dignitary at the end of March.

Councillor Rachel Andrew, cabinet member for Children’s Services at Walsall Council, said the inaugural Walsall Young People’s Awards is an opportunity to celebrate the courage, talent, commitment and dedication of the town’s younger generation.

"These awards will put young people in the spotlight, giving recognition to the hard work of young people across Walsall who are committed to improving their communities. Young people often get a bad press and the effort and time they put in to voluntary work seems to go unnoticed.

"This is our chance to say thank you and let them know how proud and grateful we are for all of their efforts."

Councillor Zahid Ali, Portfolio holder for Communities and Partnerships at Walsall Council, said: "Across Walsall we have so many young individuals who take great pride in their communities and work hard to support people in those communities.

"They are not motivated by money and they don’t do it for recognition, they do it because of who they are. It is only right we celebrate the achievements of these young role models who are a great credit not only to themselves and their families, but to the whole Walsall family."

Every young person who is nominated for an award will receive a certificate to recognise their achievements and efforts. A panel of judges will then select a winner in each of the eight categories with each winner receiving a trophy to be presented at a special awards ceremony to be held in March.

Alan Michell, Head of Service at IYPSS, added: "So many young people in Walsall make such a difference to the lives of others these awards are long overdue.

"We would urge anyone who knows a young person who deserves recognition to nominate. Maybe it’s someone who has shown great courage through adversity, someone who works tirelessly and selflessly for others, a young person who makes a genuine contribution to progressing and developing their community or simply someone who is a shining example to other youngsters."

People can make nominations online by visiting www.mywalsall.org/positive.

Deadline for nominations is Friday 10th February 2012.
