Dudley Town F.C. - Tuesday 4 May 2010

West Midlands Premier League

Tividale 3-1 Dudley Town

Dudley Town: Thomas, Ward, Keates, Waterhouse, Blair, Gater, Kinch, Morgan, Swann, Nisbett, Ashton. Used subs: Wilkhoo, Perry. Unused subs: Innes, Tasker, Jasper.

Dudley Town slumped to only their second double defeat this season as local rivals Tividale came away with all three points in a contest that suited the old cliché about games at this period of the season.

The Robins though were again thin on the ground when it came to playing staff. Senior players Lee Wherton, James Pemberton and Paul Henley all missing out. This allowed starts for Conor Gater and Rob Keates. Whilst stand in goalkeeper Luke Cunningham finally surrendered to a niggling knee injury that had hampered the season’s run in with Dudley Town’s under twenty-one side and gave Jez Thomas his first appearance of the season between the sticks.

The first half of the game was very much a non-entity. The visitors coming the closest to breaking the deadlock when former Stockport County and Cincinnati Kings striker Danny Campbell forced a solid low save out of Thomas.

Luckily for the many neutrals in the ground taking advantage of one of the final games of the season in the West Midlands the game sparked into life in the final forty-five minutes. With just five minutes gone in the second period Dudley snatched the lead. A Mark Swann header was well saved by Luke Stevens in the Tividale goal only for the rebound to fall nicely to Jake Morgan who poked the ball home.

Although Dudley’s lead only lasted ten minutes against a Tividale side boasting former Robins midfielder Rob Perks and manager Dean Whitehouse. A misunderstanding between Thomas and the rest of his defence allowed Campbell to place a shot into an empty net.

Indeed it was Campbell who gave Tividale the lead with seven minutes remaining. A looping shot from the right hand side of the six yard box deceived Thomas and showed the quality of the former professional. But by the time Joel Kettle had headed home the hosts third on eighty-seven minutes the game was effectively over and meant that Dudley can now move nowhere from their fifth place position.

But the Robins season is by no means over as they play they part in a massive final day of the West Midlands Premier league season. They travel to Bloxwich United who in all reality need the maximum quota of points to have any hope of gaining promotion to the Midland Alliance. Whilst their title rivals face just as tough fixture against last season’s champions AFC Wulfrunians. It promises to be a fantastic climax to the season.

Bloxwich United 2-0 Dudley Town

Dudley Town: Pemberton, Blair, Keates (Wilkhoo), Tasker, Waterhouse, Morgan, Kinch (Shaw), Wherton, Swann, Nisbett, Ashton (Jasper). Unused subs: Perry, Wood.

Dudley Town’s end of season run in has proved to be a little bit of an anti-climax after The Robins slipped to a second consecutive defeat. In the end the result was not even good enough for Town’s opponents who needed Ellesmere Rangers to drop points to have any chance of becoming West Midlands Premier League Champions. With Ellesmere  in the end earning a slender 2-1 victory over AFC Wulfriunians both sides left the field nursing their woes.

In his final game as manager of Dudley Town FC Ian Rowe’s squad was boosted by the return of Sam Tasker, Lee Wherton and goalkeeper James Pemberton. Whist Conor Gater, Paul Henley and Calum Martin were all unavailable.

It was Dudley who looked the lively of the two sides as Bloxwich’s big game nerves took time to wear off. Marvin Nisbett and Mark Swann both causing early worry for the home side. But it only took the hosts eleven minutes to open the scoring. A corner was punched clear by James Pemberton but then only to see the rebound blasted home by Sam Williams.

Again both sides hassled each other and it could have been the visiting Town who pulled the game level. Danny Ashton sending in a fierce free-kick that just whistled past the post.
Just seven minutes prior to half time Bloxwich controversially extended the lead. Rob Blair having been judged to have pulled a man down in the box then saw The Red Lions’ captain Mitchell Tolley strike home the resulting spot kick.

The second half proved to offer little in the way of chances, especially after the home side introduced former Solihull Borough and Rushall Olympic midfielder Ian Cooper who bossed the centre of the park. Although there were opportunities for Mark Swann and Rob Keates and Pemberton had to be at his best to deny former Chasetown hit-man Kyle Edwards extending the lead even further.

Dudley now can go into the summer with the prospect of a new manager to build upon the success of the last several years as the club pushes forward in the search for Midland Alliance football.

Here is the latest from Bloxwich United AFC...

BLOXWICH UNITED AFC 6 WOLVERHAMPTON CASUALS 1

BLOXWICH United AFC hit Wolverhampton Casuals for six to maintain their position at the top of the West Midlands (Regional) League Premier Division table.
However, it was Casuals who drew first blood when Paul Holden opened the scoring in the 18th minute. The Red Lions were brought to life following the goal and Craig Bannister equalised just before the break.

The second period saw Bloxwich step up a gear and Richard Joyce found the net just before the hour. Within four minutes it was 3-1 as skipper, Mitchell Tolley got his name on the scoresheet.

Substitutes Ahmed Obeng and Leon Taylor entered the fray and made their presence felt as Taylor notched a fourth goal on 83 minutes before weighing in with his second soon afterwards.

There was still time for Obeng to fire home right at the death to make it 6-1.

CONTINENTAL STAR 2 BLOXWICH UNITED 2 AET - BLOXWICH WIN 3-2 ON PENALTIES

THERE was plenty of drama at The Old Red Lion Ground as Bloxwich United AFC made it into the Final of the Walsall Senior Cup with a penalty shoot-out victory over Continental Star.

An early opportunity for The Red Lions saw a free-kick headed on by Sean Westley for Ahmed Obeng to fire over. It was Bloxwich who were enjoying the majority of the possession in the opening exchanges of the first half but were unable to make it count against energetic and willing opposition. That was until the 32nd minute when a corner was prodded home by Westley. An intelligent ball from Nick Smith in the next attack opened up a chance for Richard Joyce who blazed wide.

Right on the stroke of half-time Continental Star got back on level terms with a rare foray forward as Reid slotted the ball home.

The second period started with Phil Smart in the Bloxwich goal making a couple of fine saves in quick succession as Star began with real purpose. However, it was Bloxwich who got their noses back in front as Sam Williams played in Smith who expertly lifted the ball home.

The lead didn't last long, though, as a slip in defence allowed Reid to stride through and he made no mistake, Adam Simkiss' cross-cum-shot rattled the crossbar before there was a golden chance for Ahmed Obeng on 86 minutes when Joyce's ball forward was flicked on by Simkiss to leave Obeng through on goal, but he dragged his effort wide.

Extra-time started with Star rattling the crossbar themselves and then firing wide from close range following the resulting corner.

A piledriver from Garry Barton flew over before Obeng missed another good chance as he rounded the 'keeper only for his strike to be cleared in front of goal.

Genuine goalscoring chances were few and far between in the second period of extra-time and so the game went to penalties, which Bloxwich won 3-2 to set up a Banks's Stadium clash with local rivals, Rushall Olympic on Tuesday, May 18th.

"We've played much better this season, but the lads worked their socks off and deserved to make it to the Final," said manager, Michael Moseley. "It's a real achievement and a proud day for everyone connected to the club."

The Red Lions close their League campaign with a home game against Dudley Town on Saturday, which could see them clinch the title. In a bid to attract a large crowd, admission prices have been slashed to just £1 per person. Come and show your support to The Red Lions.
