Local rugby club Warley RFC is celebrating this week, after achieving promotion for the first time in 18 years.
The Sandwell based rugby club finished second in the Midlands 5 West (North) league, after securing 11 solid wins to grant them automatic promotion to Midlands 4 West (North) league.
Warley RFC coaches Bob Brown and Dave Walsh successfully steered the men’s teams to produce some of the strongest team performances seen since promotion was last achieved in 1992.
Richard Harrison, first team Captain, said: “Achieving promotion has been a fantastic team effort, helped enormously by the support of the whole club behind us. We’re looking forward to the start of next season already.”
The club, based on Tat Bank Road in Oldbury, is home to eight rugby teams, with five home-grown youth players playing league rugby for the men’s section this season.
Warley RFC President Barrie Davies said: “Everyone at Warley RFC is extremely proud of what has been achieved this season. We have not only earned promotion, but we have also seen eight Warley rugby teams compete throughout the season, including our women’s team for the first time.”
The club, which marks its 40th anniversary this year, will officially celebrate the first team’s promotion at the annual President’s Day on Sunday 2nd May, where the local community are invited to join the festivities at the Tat Bank Road clubhouse.
