Social media to give thousands access to Police Authority meeting

POLICE will be blogging, tweeting and filming to give more people access to a special meeting of the West Midlands Police Authority on Thursday.

West Midlands Police Authority will be holding the public meeting at the Midlands Arts Centre, Canon Hill Park, Birmingham between 9am and 12 midday on Thursday 8 September

The special meeting has been organised to consider the recent disturbances in the West Midlands.

During the meeting Chief Constable Chris Sims will present his report about West Midlands Police response to the disorder to the Police Authority.

The venue will seat around 100 members of the public, but those who are unable to attend will still be able to keep in touch with proceedings thanks to social media and the internet.

A live blog will be updated with the latest developments from the meeting on www.west-midlands-pa.gov.uk/live. Users of the feature will also be able to ask questions about the event, and will be given their chance to give their opinions on the issues raised.

This feedback will be given to the police and the Authority after the meeting.

Tweeters can stay up-to-date on the @WMPolice Twitter account, or by following #wmpameet for updates throughout the morning.

And for the first time highlights from the meeting will be streamed on the West Midlands Police Authority website immediately after the meeting.

Finally the public have been emailing their questions to the Authority, some of which will be put to the Chief Constable Chris Sims and Police Authority Chair Derek Webley, with some questions to be asked in person.

Police Authority Chair Bishop Derek Webley said, "It is very important that the public sees the Police Authority holding the force to account and finding out how the recent disturbances impacted across the West Midlands. We need to understand what happened, why it happened, what lessons can be learned, and what we need to do in future.  I therefore invite as many people as possible to take advantage of the technology that is being used, to follow this meeting, even if you are not able to attend in person."

Chief Constable Chris Sims, who will be presenting his report about the disorder, said: "We want as many people as possible to be able to participate in this meeting.

"Whilst we cannot fit as many as we would like into the room, technology will give access to people who are interested in hearing the findings of the report, and allow people to ask questions about the meeting.
