ATTEMPTED ROBBERY AT CRADLEY STORE

A GROUP of men attempted to rob a Cradley shopkeeper last night (Monday 29 March).

The incident happened at the Safeburys store on Colley Lane at 8.45pm.

Three men were seen to get out of a car outside the shop and ran inside, demanding cash. The assistant shouted for help from colleagues at the back of the store, and when the offenders failed to get the cash register open they fled the scene empty handed.

Detective inspector Will O’Connor from Halesowen CID said: “The assistant was understandably shaken after being confronted by a group of masked men, but thankfully he was uninjured.

“On this occasion the offenders failed in their robbery attempt, but we are keen to trace them before they try again elsewhere.”

The men were seen to use a dark coloured Ford Focus car, believed to be on false plates. It left the scene in the direction of Butchers Lane.

They wore dark clothing with hoods up and had their faces covered.

Anyone with information should contact CID at Halesowen police station on 0845 113 5000 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

SCREWDRIVER MURDER ENQUIRY LAUNCHED

MURDER ENQUIRY LAUNCHED AFTER 24 YEAR OLD MAN DIES FROM HEAD INJURIES

DETECTIVES from West Midlands Police have launched a murder enquiry after a 24 year old man from Birmingham died after being stabbed with a screwdriver.

Sarfraz Khan died from serious head injuries on Tuesday 16 March 2010 in hospital where he had been since the incident on Friday 12 March in Long Street, Sparkbrook.

The assault happened between 1030 pm and 1130 pm on Friday 12 March in Larches Green play area on Long Street, Sparkbrook, Birmingham.

Sarfraz, who was born on 26 June 1985 was from the Hodge Hill area of Birmingham and had lived in Birmingham all of his life. He lived with his family and had three sisters and one brother and is described by family as a good hearted, very bubbly person and always smiling.

He worked with his father in the family business.

A major investigation was immediately launched under the direction of Senior Investigating Officer DCI Richard Baker from the Major Investigation Unit.

DCI Rich Baker:

“Sarfraz was in Long St, Sparkbrook at around 1130 pm to visit a friend in the area.

“He went into the park where there were a group of teenagers sitting on the play area. There appears to have been an exchange between Sarfraz and some of the girls in the group, which turned into an argument and two male youths from the group have joined in.

“At some point a screwdriver was produced by one of the males and Sarfraz was stabbed in the temple.

“The offender has then ran off and was last seen turning into Beechfield Road in Sparkbrook.

“There was up to about 8 teenagers in the park that night who we need to speak to urgently.

“All our early enquiries suggest the offender is a male of asian or mixed race asian appearance. Aged between 16 and 17 years, with a long oval shaped face with a small nose and dark eyebrows. He had black, short clippered hair and was wearing a navy coloured woolly hat. He was around 5′6″ tall, of thin skinny build and a Birmingham accent. He was wearing plain grey t-shirt or top and grey jogging bottoms and he had a white coloured bag.

“The screwdriver has been recovered and is described as yellow and 8″ long.

“We are also keen to speak to two of the female teenagers we believe were at the scene.

“One was of mixed race Caribbean white appearance, 5′9” tall, medium to chubby build, long dark brown hair, tied up and pulled back onto the top of her head in a bun. It is believed that she is about 15 years old. She was wearing dark blue jeans and a hooded top as well as a handbag.

“The second female is described as Caribbean, 5′9″ tall, thin to medium build and with afro hair about 12″ long in a Don King style, as if it were about to be plaited.
Again, she is thought to be about 15 or 16years old. She was wearing black clothing, long sleeved tight fitting top with a shiny pattern on the front.

“An additional person we would like to speak to is a second male teenager who was with the offender. He is about 16 or 17 years old and is described as light skinned asian, about 5′8″ tall, medium / chubby build with black short hair and a local Birmingham accent. He was wearing a light grey hoody and dark bottoms.

“I am appealing specifically to the girls who were in the group on Friday night to come forward.

“To parents and family members if any of your children have seen this or been involved in this their behaviour may be different, they may be worried or upset. You may even be missing that screwdriver.

“We ask you to come forward with your children and help us. We understand that young people in the area who where there and know something may have real concerns about coming forward.

“We have a proven track record in protecting witnesses and in the first instance all information provided to us will be treated in the strictest of confidence.

“Information can be given through the police, or through Crimestoppers.

“Finally, to the person who did this, I am quite sure that they didn’t set out that night to harm anyone & helping is in their best interest to come forward to us as soon as possible.”

Detectives have released a picture of Sarfraz, along with some CCTV from that evening of people that they would wish to speak to and an efit.

Extra patrols after theft at memorial

Security has been stepped up after metal was stolen from a landmark war memorial.

Patrols around the clock will be held at the Barr Beacon open space after copper was stolen from the roof of the War Memorial, off Beacon Road, Aldridge.

The stone structure topped with a copper roof was also vandalised sometime between 8pm on Thursday March 4 and 9am on Friday March 5.

The memorial is to the memory of men from Staffordshire and Warwickshire who gave their lives in the First World War.

Councillor Anthony Harris, Walsall Council cabinet member for leisure and culture, said: “It’s quite clear that these thieves staged a reprehensible attempt to steal from a War Memorial.

“Some copper was removed but they have also caused a fair amount of damage and we are still counting the cost of this.

“The roof has been damaged and so have wooden beams that form part of it. The idiots who did this left behind some tools. We will be handing them over to West Midlands Police officers.

“It goes without saying that we would ask people who may have information to contact the police.”

Visitors to the green space have been warned that the structure is to be covered with a tarpaulin to stop further damage from the elements.

A panoramic disc funded with grant aid secured by the Aldridge Rotary Club was also vandalised in the incident.

Extra private security patrols have been arranged by Walsall Council.

Barr Beacon is one of the highest point in the West Midlands and can offer views of Shropshire, the Black Country, Staffordshire and Cannock Chase.

The 240-acre site is a vital green area and is managed by Walsall Council as part of around 1,000 acres of parks and countryside.

Anyone with information has been urged to call West Midlands Police 0845 113 5000.

HIGH-VALUE METAL STOLEN FROM NETHERTON FIRM

METALWORK worth £100,000 has been stolen from a Dudley firm.

Thieves have stolen four pallet loads of stainless steel which was set to be used for conveyor belts at David Woods Bakers on Peartree Industrial Estate, Crackley Way in Netherton.

The thieves struck at around 8.10am and 8.16am on Sunday 21 February.

They loaded the metal into a distinctive Ford Transit flat-bed truck, and then made off in an unknown direction. The vehicle had a row of lights on the roof of the yellow cab.

The firm, David Woods Bakers, has offered a reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those involved in the theft.

PC Daniel Hall from the Merry Hill and Woodside Neighbourhood Team is investigating the theft. He said: “This is a significant load for the offenders to move and it would have been fairly noticeable.

“Due to the weight of the metal we can only assume that a number of people would have been involved in the theft, in order to move it from its storage place to the truck.

“We can only assume that the offenders plan to sell on this metal, and we remind local scrap dealers of their duty when it comes to accepting goods, which are of a suspicious nature.

“We urge anyone who recognises the van, or has been offered items for sale similar to those pictured to come forward and contact police at Brierley Hill.”

West Midlands Police launched Operation Steel back in the summer of 2007 in order to tackle the rising number of metal thefts across the Black Country. In the space of a year over 1000 people were arrested under the operation, for a variety of offences linked to the theft of metal and the handling of stolen goods.

The tactics employed during the operation became part of every day policing for officers across the Black Country, and the number of metal thefts gradually decreased as a result of targeted police work and a reduction in prices offered for scrap metal.

Anyone with information relating to the incident, or has suspicions about similar items they have been offered for sale is urged to contact Brierley Hill police station on 0845 113 5000 or speak to Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
