DISPERSAL ORDER FOR NEWTON TO TACKLE ANTI-SOCIAL BEHAVIOUR

A DISPERSAL order aimed at tackling anti-social behaviour will come into force on Wednesday 1 June 2011 for the Newton area of West Bromwich, including Red House Park and surrounding streets.

The order was granted by police at Sandwell in consultation with Sandwell Council and will be in effect until 30 November 2011.

The dispersal order will allow police officers to remove groups of two or more young people at any time of day or night and anyone under 16 found in the area by police, without an adult or parent supervision, can be taken back to their place of residence.

The action was taken following complaints from local residents and retailers about groups of young people congregating outside shops, bus shelters and in parks causing a general nuisance during the school holidays.

Sergeant Kym Jones, from the Newton neighbourhood team, said:” We have received complaints from local residents and businesses about young people congregating and causing nuisance during the school holidays. The new dispersal order strengthens our power within the area which will mean we can disperse groups.

“We have also talked to the youths in the area to ask the reason for their behaviour and, as expected, they told us that they are bored. To tackle this we have raised funding and planned numerous activities for the holidays.

“We take anti-social behaviour seriously and hope the new dispersal order and the timetable of activities will help reduce problems in the area. If you are affected by anti-social behaviour then please call me or one of my team on 0345 113 5000.”
