Taxi driver fined for overcharging in Walsall

A 35-year-old Walsall man has been ordered to pay a total of £545 for failing to set his meter and overcharging.

 

Hackney Carriage driver Rashid Mahmood, Thorpe Road, Walsall admitted committing the offences on January 29th when he appeared before Walsall magistrates on Monday.

 

Magistrates fined him £180 and also ordered him to pay £350 costs and a £15 victims surcharge.

 

The court heard that  Mr Mahmood was caught as part of an enforcement operation in January 2011.

 

The court heard that officers got into his hackney carriage on the rank and asked to be taken to The Vault, Darlaston.

 

Mr Mahmood carried out the journey charging £15.00 at the destination. He did not set his meter and the fare should have been approximately £9.50.

 

Councillor Zahid Ali, cabinet member for communities and partnerships at Walsall Council, said: “Yet again, the message has been sent out by this conviction that we will not tolerate this type of illegal practice.

 

“We are working hard to drive up and maintain standards and we want to build confidence in the service that is operated.”
