Police Authority welcomes metal theft proposals

West Midlands Police Authority has welcomed Home Office proposals for cash transactions for scrap metal to be outlawed. Home Secretary Theresa May has also announced that there will be stiffer fines for all offences under the existing Scrap Metal Dealers Act 1964.

Councillor Bob Jones, Chair of the Authority’s Finance and Resources Committee, proposed a notice of motion on metal theft to the Authority in December last year. Commenting on the new proposals, he said, “Metal theft costs millions of pounds to businesses and community groups each year, as well as causing huge disruption and risks to life and property.

Any action is welcome.

I’m glad that the government has responded to our concerns about the widespread problem of metal theft. Sensible regulation, such as the banning of cash transactions, has drastically reduced metal theft on the continent, and I hope that we can do the same thing here.

We will be following the implementation of these proposals to see that they are introduced as quickly as possible, as well as monitoring their effectiveness.”
