Brett Young day centre celebrates 25th birthday

The Mayor of Dudley joined staff and service users at a special birthday party at the Brett Young day centre to celebrate its 25th anniversary.

Brett Young Day Centre on Old Hawne Lane, Halesowen, opened in 1984 and is one of eight Dudley Council-run day centres for older people and people with a physical disability across the borough.

The centre provides day services for 80 local people who take part in centre based activities like art and craft, choir and music and gentle exercise groups as well as going out and about into their own community on church visits, pub lunches and organised day trips.

As part of the birthday celebrations organised by the day centre committee, the centre’s regular visitors enjoyed performances by the Brett Young choir and by Lee Ralph who wrote and performed a special song to mark the centre’s birthday.

Staff and service users also made a note of special memories at the centre which were then read out during the afternoon. The day was brought to a close by a laugh out loud performance by ‘Marlene’ the Black Country comedienne.

Special thanks were given to volunteers at the centre including Gladys Goodall who has volunteered at the centre since it opened and to staff including Irene Smitheman who is the centre’s longest member of staff having worked there for the last 17 years.

The Mayor of Dudley, Councillor Pat Martin, said:
“It was an honour to attend and be part of the special birthday celebrations. The centre provides activities and a sociable environment which are clearly valued by its services users. Many had heartfelt memories to share which made it a truly wonderful occasion.”

The centre is named after Frances Brett Young, a Halesowen born poet and writer. Frances was famous for writing a series of novels set in the industrial Black Country and was also a local GP.
