OFFICERS from the Wednesbury South neighbourhood policing team have secured a dispersal order to cut anti-social behaviour in Linear Park and Leabrook.
The team applied for the order following complaints from local residents about feeling intimidated, harassed and distressed by groups of young people hanging around drinking, littering and causing criminal damage in the area.
The order will allow police officers and police community support officers to disperse groups of two or more people who are congregating in the area covered by the ban.
Officers will also have the authority to take anyone they believe to be under the age of 16, who are not with a parent or responsible adult, back to their home address between the hours of 9.00pm and 6.00am.
The order will come into force from Saturday 22 May 2010 and run until Monday 22 November 2010.
It is hoped the order will help cut the problems with ant-social behaviour and help re-build the confidence of the local community.
Sergeant Sam Jones, who heads the Wednesbury South neighbourhood team, said: “We are extremely pleased with the terms of the dispersal order. We feel it will allow us to further address the concerns of the community.
"The dispersal order is just one aspect of the work we will continue to do in the area. We are also working closely with partner agencies including youth services to divert young people into activities that are taking place locally.
"We hope that working with the young community will reduce the problems and help the residents of the Wednesbury South area feel safer."
Councillor Derek Rowley, Sandwell Council's cabinet member for safer neighbourhoods, said: "The police and council are working closing together to tackle anti-social behaviour wherever it arises.
"The council was happy to support this dispersal order to give local residents' respite from the problems they have experienced. I'm pleased to see our youth services working in this and other areas to try and make sure all young people are aware of and able to take part in constructive activities, which has benefits for the whole community."
