Dudley market place – second consultation round

A multi-million pound overhaul of Dudley’s historic market place has moved a step closer after council bosses announced the next stage of the consultation.

The proposals include the option for people to say whether they prefer traditional or contemporary market stall designs, as well as asking for feedback on the choice of paving, seating and lighting being proposed.

Dubbed the “showpiece project” for Dudley town centre, the redevelopment of the market place now includes Castle Street, up to and including the Earl of Dudley statue, which stands proudly opposite St Edmunds Church.

The extended scheme now includes; additional parking, new footpaths, improved controlled crossing points and new cycle parking in Castle Street and improvements to the steps and frontage of St Edmunds Church.

The initial consultation, which was held in March and ran for six weeks, featured three different market place options, the relocation of the Duncan Edwards statue and to bring the fountain back into use, by introducing delicate lighting to highlight its special features.

Councillor Angus Adams, cabinet member for economic regeneration, said:

”Dudley town centre is a place of historic importance and this significant redevelopment will sympathetically help to restore and highlight important features and bring about many advantages and benefits for everyone who uses the town.

“We have taken on board what people told us from the initial consultation and we are confident with what we are proposing during this next stage.

“I hope many people take part in this important consultation, which will be pivotal to a whole range of new private sector investment projects for the town.”

The consultation on the proposals runs from today (Mon) to December 2.

People can take part in the consultation by picking up a leaflet from Dudley Council Plus or Dudley Library. It can also be completed online, accessible from the home page of the council’s website www.dudley.gov.uk

In addition, the market place proposals can be viewed in a unit that will be positioned in front of the fountain. It will be there from Wednesday 26 to Saturday 29 October and Wednesday 16 to Friday 18 November. The displays will be staffed from 10am to 3pm on each day (10am to 2pm on Saturday 29), for traders, businesses, residents and shoppers, to come along ask questions.

Public art will feature in the overall scheme and examples can be viewed at the consultation events.

A special lighting display will take place on Wednesday 23 November at 5.30pm, where people can see examples of special features being lit up in Dudley town centre. Meeting place – Duncan Edwards statue.

Completed questionnaires must be returned or submitted online by December 2 2011.
