A new display at Walsall Museum this month celebrates the achievements of Walsall’s Black Reading Group, who were among the first winners of a Mayor’s Civic Award in 2003.
The Black Reading Group is a multi-cultural group based at Walsall Central Library and meets regularly to read Black authors and develop their own writing. In 2005 the group published ‘Dis n Dat’, a collection of poems and other writings by members of the group. Copies of ‘Dis n Dat’, as well as examples of some of the other books the group has read over the years and photos of some of their activities are on show in the display. The display was put together with the assistance of Carl Green, a representative of the group who received the Civic Award on their behalf in 2003.
The display also explores the history of the Civic Awards, which were launched in 2003 to honour local people who have made outstanding contributions to life in the borough. The awards highlight the good work and commitment of individuals, organisations and companies throughout the whole of Walsall. Sister Dora is the figurehead for the awards in recognition of her compassion and dedication to caring for the people of Walsall during her time as a nurse here in the 19th century, and a number of items relating to Sister Dora, including the ceremonial key presented to her in 1878 to mark the opening of the new Cottage Hospital, can be seen in the display.
The display, entitled ‘Sister Dora’s Legacy: Celebrating Achievement and Diversity in Walsall’ is on show until Saturday 3 March 2012 in Walsall Museum’s Your Corner display area, a dedicated area within the Museum’s permanent local history gallery, The Changing Face of Walsall. This is a space where groups and individuals in the local community can put on their own displays on a variety of subjects, from aspects of local heritage to their own collections.
