Sports Mela kickstarts Caldmore Village Festival celebrations

More than 1,200 people turned out to try their hand at a range of sports from the traditional tug of war to the more unusual games of stonelifting and kabbadi as part of this year's Caldmore Village Festival.

 

The Sports Mela last Sunday (22 May)kickstarted four days of celebrations spread over two weekends. The event at Walsall Rugby Club included a tug of war between local pub teams as well as Caldmore Traders versus Councillors.

 

Caldmore Village Festival continues on Saturday, Sunday and Bank holiday Monday 28, 29 and 30 May on Caldmore Community Primary School's field.

 

The festival attracted thousands of visitors when it was staged for the first time last year and organisers are hoping 2011 will be equally successful.

 

Councillor Mohammed Arif, vice chairman of Caldmore Village Festival Group, said: "The sports Mela and village festival has been a year in the planning and everyone is delighted it has got off to such a great start.

 

"Everyone is now looking forward to this weekend which will include a wide range of events for everyone to enjoy."

 

This weekend's celebrations get underway on Saturday 28 May at Caldmore Primary school from midday.The festival is backed by among others Walsall Council, Walsall Housing Group and backed by donations from Caldmore traders.
